Koret Winter Update: Leaning on Community

Quarterly Update | Dec 2023

Kehilla, Hebrew for community, is at the heart of our work. Our grantmaking has always focused on supporting and strengthening the Jewish community, at home and in Israel. In responding to the horrific events of October 7, the solidarity of community has been paramount. Koret grantees have been working overtime to offer relief and comfort—physical, emotional, and spiritual—to those in need.

Many of our grantees in Israel have leveraged their particular expertise and resources to swiftly counteract the effects of the immediate and ongoing crisis. Read below how these organizations have stepped up during Israel’s time of greatest need.

Koret’s Bay Area grantmaking also seeks to make our local community stronger and more resilient. Needs are amplified during the holiday season. Our Bay Area food program grantees offer extra support for the most vulnerable community members, making sure everyone receives a little something special to feel festive. The Koret team recently had the opportunity to volunteer at the St. Anthony Foundation Dining Room, where we experienced firsthand the depth and breadth—and warmth—of St. Anthony’s community.

During the holiday season, we encourage everyone to connect with and lean on their community, and Koret could not be prouder of our kehilla.

United for the Jewish State: Koret grantees supporting Israel and Jews worldwide

Jewish organizations around the world sprang into action after the attacks of October 7, leveraging every resource at their disposal to provide both immediate relief and long-term advocacy. Koret’s network of grantees—both in Israel and in the U.S.—have shown resourcefulness, compassion, and determination to support Israel, its citizens, and Jews worldwide. Learn about how our grantees are supporting Israel here.

St. Anthony Foundation: Be our guest

Earlier this year Koret employees were given a tour of St. Anthony’s, a pillar in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood for over 70 years, providing food, clothing, medical care, and community. The palpable kindness and respect of every staff member and volunteer led to our newest grantee story about the organization’s approach to service. Exemplified in its dining room, St. Anthony’s philosophy asserts that everyone who walks through their doors will be treated as a guest, and only through recognizing a person’s dignity and gaining their trust can you help them take the steps toward stability.
