Final documentary of acclaimed LGBTQ+ filmmaker Debra Chasnoff set to premier at Frameline Film Festival

June is Pride Month in the United States, and Koret is proud to support PROGNOSIS | Notes on Living, the final film of queer documentary filmmaker Debra Chasnoff. Stanford Live returns with movie nights at Frost Amphitheater

After a year since its last performance, Stanford Live is returning with outdoor socially distanced programming at Frost Amphitheater. Starting on April 29 with Stanford Under the Stars: Movie Nights at Frost, Stanford Live will host a series of classic and contemporary films, and plans to transition into live performances later in the summer.

On the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a look at the music of segregation

April 19 marked the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising — the 1943 act of resistance in which Warsaw’s Jews refused to be transported to the Nazi death camps. Composer Frank London’s newest work explores 500 years of music in Jewish and non-Jewish ghettos around the world and its influence on the wider culture.

Marine archaeology collaboration celebrates opening of field station

The bilateral collaboration between UC San Diego’s Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology and the University of Haifa’s Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies recently celebrated the opening of its joint marine archaeology field station in Akko, Israel. An announcement was shared at the virtual celebration that the collaboration was also awarded the 2021 CENIC Innovations in Networking Award for Research Applications.

San Francisco’s new tennis center opens in Golden Gate Park

After a complete renovation, the new Lisa & Douglas Goldman Tennis Center in Golden Gate Park is open and bustling with activity, with state of the art public courts to practice and play. It is also home to the Koret Tennis & Learning Center, which provides academic support, mentorship, and tennis instruction for middle schoolers from underserved neighborhoods in San Francisco.

Remembering on Yom HaShoah

Yom HaShoah commemorates the millions of innocent Jewish and other lives lost during the Holocaust. The Koret Foundation is committed to combating antisemitism and identity-based hatred through grants supporting Holocaust education. A joint memorial program led by Koret grantees Jewish Family & Children’s Services and the San Francisco Jewish Community Center will be held April 7-9 to remember those no longer with us and celebrate the bravery and resilience of survivors.

In spite of the challenges it endured in 2020 and its cancelled summer program, the Camp Tawonga community stayed connected through virtual Friday night song sessions, Tot Shabbats, Jewish holidays and more throughout the year. This Impact Report details Tawonga’s many accomplishments in 2020 as it looks forward to the 2021 summer at camp.

Commonwealth Club discusses Educating for American Democracy

Educating for American Democracy is a bipartisan, multi-sector effort to reinvigorate the teaching and learning of American history and civics in schools. The Commonwealth Club will livestream a conversation with leaders of this effort about why the country needs a renewed commitment to history and civics education. This program is part of Creating Citizens, Commonwealth Club’s new civics education project, founded with Koret support.

California’s ethnic studies model curriculum moves to the next phase

The California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum (ESMC) is currently under review. The new ESMC will be used as the model curriculum for high schools across California and could ultimately be adopted across the nation. The Jewish Community Relations Council has worked tirelessly and in partnership with other Jewish community organizations to help build a balanced and inclusive ESMC. The third version of the curriculum will be reviewed for approval by the California State Board of Education this March.
