Congregation Emanu-El: Grand Reopening

Since 2023, Congregation Emanu-El has been hard at work on an extensive renovation to bring the historic synagogue into the 21st century. In addition to seismic retrofitting and security updates, the renovation is designed to make the space welcoming, inclusive, and able to accommodate the nearly 1,100 programs that take place there annually.
New preschool classrooms are being added to its education center, as well as small conference rooms for gathering to support adult learning. The renovated Guild Hall space will be better able to meet the needs of congregants who want to celebrate milestones with family and friends, and to serve as a gathering space for community partners, reflecting Emanu-El’s role as a pillar of the San Francisco community.
On September 12, the synagogue will host a Grand Reopening Shabbat Celebration, which will mark not only the reopening, but also 100 years of vibrant Jewish life on Lake Street. The celebration will include a reception with live music and the opportunity for visitors and congregants to explore the new spaces ahead of the Shabbat service.
