California Academy of Sciences: Careers in Science Internship application opens

Applications opened on February 1 for a new cohort of Careers in Science (CiS) interns at the California Academy of Sciences. This program, funded in part by the Koret Foundation, provides San Francisco teens with a once in a lifetime opportunity to be paid to learn, teach and conduct fieldwork, fostering a love of science and a greater understanding of careers in STEM.
Interns work on Saturdays during the school year and weekdays during the summer, supporting educational programs at the museum and partnering with Academy scientists and researchers to do their own research. Additionally, they serve on the CiS Leadership Council and are eligible for mentorship from Academy experts. This program is an incredible opportunity for youth who are interested in STEM to gain real-world work experience, build confidence and skills, and gain a greater understanding of the natural world around them.
CiS seeks to build diversity in the STEM workforce, foster educational and career success in youth, and increase STEM literacy and environmental stewardship. In 2021, to mark the 25th anniversary of the program, the Academy conducted a survey of nearly 100 CiS alumni to gain a greater understanding of the impact of the program. Over the total participants, 55% were female, and 95% belonged to groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields. CiS alums were four times more likely than the national average to earn a STEM degree, and 95% of participants went on to earn a college degree.
The Koret Foundation is proud to support CiS and build the next generation of leaders in STEM. To be eligible, youth need to be in 9th or 10th grade at an SFUSD school, maintain a GPA of 2.5 and be able to obtain a valid work permit.
